Honey -Medicinal Health and Beauty Benefits

here are 20,000 types of bees in the world, so obviously I will list just a few of the more common and interesting types.

* Bumblebees are large, hairy, black and yellow, display social behavior and live in colonies,. They flourish very well in tropical climates.
* Honeybees are described in Part I of this series.
* Carpenter bees have metal like black color with no yellow. They tunnel into solid wood so saw dust near a tree with an opening could be a warning.
* Ground bees dig tunnels to provide shelter for their progeny and are usually found in well-shaded areas with loose soil and little vegetation. They can sting, but they are not very aggressive.
* Parasitic bees are also called "cuckoo" bees.

They don't search for food or build nests but they live off of the nests of solitary bees by sneaking in, laying eggs in the chambers before the host can lay their own. They live off the food provided and when the females are born they kill the queen bee and they all take over the new hive. Not a very nice species!
* Africanized bee: These are better known as "killer bees" and are very aggressive. Initially, they came into Europe and just attacked hives killing the queen bee and taking over. They spread from South America and are in the lower south western US and spreading. Certainly stay away from them if at all possible.

There are so many bees that you could easily write a book just on them and their idiosyncrasies.Honey has many medicinal and beauty benefits beyond satisfying the palate. The benefits of honey are amazing as it is sweeter than sugar but moderate consumption doesn't cause weight gain. It is a powerful antioxidant, yet it has all the goodness of fruits and vegetables. The proof of this claim is its chemical composition of complex sugars, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. The antioxidants fight free radicals and reverse aging. I would be pleased if it just stopped aging! Free radicals are everywhere; in food, in the air we breath, and in the sunshine. The antioxidants neutralize the free radicals, thus the benefits. In two studies of antioxidants in honey the first one from the University of Illinois concluded honey had a mild protective effect and the second study by University of California concluded that honey has as many antioxidants as spinach, apples, oranges or strawberries.

Honey is a great antiseptic because of its antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties. It has cleansing properties for your body and health, which include skin care and healing. Its powerful healing attributes have been used for thousands of years and were known to promote healing for cuts, cure ailments and diseases, and correct health disorders for many generations. In a 2007, study Dr. Shona Blair from the University of Sidney  health and beauty concluded that honey dressings should be used as a first line of defense, not as a last resort. Honey also reduces inflammation, helps shed dead tissue, and stimulates the development of new blood cells.

The Wonders of Honey in Health And Beauty Recipes

Honey is a wonder food that’s used widely in culinary dishes and for other purposes. Honey is also simply use as a sweetener in food and beverages. Historically, honey has been cultivated and used since the ancient times in various civilizations. Egyptians use honey to sweeten cakes and biscuits and also for embalming dead bodies in mummification process. The Romans soldiers use honey simply for treating wounds and scar whenever in a battle.

Because at that time honey isn’t commonly obtained, its use is reserved for the noblemen and upper class of the society. These ancient civilizations used honey because of its properties and over the years scientists have discovered other properties that can benefit us for various purposes and nowadays we can purchase honey too.

Honey is used because of its distinct and unique properties. Honey is known for its antibacterial and acts as an antiseptic agent. It’s because the natural condition of high sugar content in honey isn’t suitable for microbes to thrive. Honey also is humectant, which it naturally draws out moisture from air and retains it. This trait is useful in treating open wounds as keeping the skin moist and hydrated while encourage the repairing of the skin. Honey also contains antioxidants that can neutralize harmful chemicals in our body and also protecting the skin from UV rays. Studies have found that the darker the honey, the higher the number of antioxidants it contains.

As this wonder food is widely available you can use honey as part of your skin care routine by using it as one of the main ingredients in making a facial mask. The good thing about honey is you can combine it with other ingredients to be mixed with and you can have your own facial mask recipe. Because of special properties in honey, it also can be mixed with other specific ingredients to treat certain skin conditions. Don’t be turn off thinking it’ll mess your kitchen; the benefits you reap will definitely outweigh the hassle.

You only need to warm up the organic honey until it becomes liquid in a small glass or metal bowl which is immersed in hot water until its smooth. Apply it equally with a facial mask brush or spatula on your clean face and neck, keeping the eye area clear for about 15 – 20 minutes. Then you wash it off with warm water, end with a splash of cold water and pat dry with a clean towel. Finally apply a moisturizer, this way you "seal" your skin to keep the water inside

As for you who may have dry skin, avocado & honey face mask is the way to go. Prepare 2 tablespoons of avocado flesh, 2 tablespoons honey, and 1 egg yolk. Put all the ingredients in a blender, or you can mash the mixture by hand in a bowl. Use your fingers to spread the mask over your face and neck and leave it on for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer, before removing it.

Mix half tablespoon of raw honey (filter it first), with half a banana, a quarter-cup of cooked oatmeal with a bit of milk, and a whole egg. Apply it on your face if you have a sensitive skin.

For oily skin that are prone to breakouts, use honey for its antibacterial properties. Try apple, sage and honey. You’ll need 2 tablespoons organic honey, 1 apple (cored, unpeeled, and slice into pieces), and 1/2 teaspoon of sage. Puree the apple in a food processor. Add the honey and sage and mix it well until you have a smooth and uniform paste. Cool it down in the fridge for about 20 minutes. Apply it and let it settle for 30minutes, and rinse it.

Honey is definitely a wonder food. As honey is good for your body, it’s good for your skin too. Convince yourself with these recipes and you’ll be swearing by it in no time.
